Migrating from "multichain" voting strategy

Understanding the "multichain" strategy

The "multichain" strategy was created before Snapshot had built-in multichain support. It allowed spaces to combine strategies from different blockchains using inner strategies within a wrapper. Since we now have native multichain support, some spaces have been using "multichain" to get around our 8-strategy limit, which causes performance problems. We recommend moving to individual voting strategies with custom networks directly instead of using the "multichain" wrapper.

Migration steps

  1. Go to your space settings

  2. Look at your "multichain" strategy and note all the strategies inside it

  3. Add each strategy individually, setting the appropriate network for each one

  4. Delete the old "multichain" strategy

  5. Make sure you have 8 or fewer total strategies (Snapshot Pro users can have more)

Configuration changes

You'll take each strategy out of the "multichain" wrapper and add them as individual strategies. Each one can specify which network it uses directly, so you don't need the wrapper anymore.

Important considerations

You must migrate before August 2025 or you won't be able to create new proposals. Your total voting power will stay the same after migration, but you'll now be able to see the voting power breakdown for each individual strategy instead of just a combined total like with "multichain".

If you need more than 8 strategies, consider upgrading to Snapshot Pro.
